On Dec 8, 2012, House of Dust and the Israeli Burning Man community got together to produce Love and Dust, Israel Edition. The event which took place in Old Jaffa at Anna Loulou Bar, is the twin for Toronto’s Dec 29th Love and Dust with Desyn Masiello, Squid Lid, Justin James, Hans Ohm and friends.
The Israeli burning Man community, relative to the size of the country, is large and active: on a short notice, over 150 Israeli burners and friends came down from as far as the far Northern borders, Jerusalem, the centre of the country and the southern areas, some driving 4-6 hours to get to the event.
The celebration started around 9pm with people quickly packing up the place, bringing food to share, projecting beautiful video art [originally filmed on the Playa and other burner events], dancing to the sounds of K-Dust and local hero DJ Diana, and forming an impromptu street festival on the ancient narrow streets of Old Jaffa.
The venue is set in a historic Ottoman Empire era building made of large carved stones and designed in typical 1800’s arches, each room makes for a unique space. The room next door was also available, a DJ system showed out of nowhere and a second “stage” formed.
The music was flowing: first came House of Dust’s K-Dust (Yossi) spinning a unique blend of tunes he calls “Playa House”, an energized, upbeat and dancy Deep House set padded with samples and rythms. Diana was up next, spinning a funky version of Progressive Trance. Needless to say the dance floor was the busiest spot all night long.
Niv from Anna Loulou prepared some Yerba Mate tea which was kept warm and given freely all night long. The people were super friendly, welcoming and smiling. We left in time to make it home before sunrise. We’ll be back in Tel-Aviv soon for another installment!
